Hello and welcome to my Revelations Study series part 2. In this post I will do a complete overview of the book of Revelations starting with chapter 4:1-2 (The Rapture) to chapter 21 and 22 (Eternity Future).
As I said, this will be a complete “overview,” meaning that we will look at the overall big picture of Revelations and hit all the main events, but bypass all the finer details and save those for later in the series.
But for now, lets get a basic understand of how Revelations will play out.
In the future there will be 3 main events as depicted in the example picture (above). The first main event will be the Rapture (Ch 4:1-2) of the Church followed by a 7 year period of time call the Tribulation Period.
The second event will be directly after the tribulation period which is the Return (Ch 19:11) of Jesus Christ or also known as the 2nd coming of Christ. Jesus will come down from Heaven, establish his kingdom here on Earth, and we will enter a 1000 year period of peace called the Millennium Kingdom.
The third and last event will be at the conclusion of the Millennium Kingdom called the Retribution, (Ch 20:11), that is, the Great White Throne Judgement, followed by the creation of the New Heaven, New Earth, New Jerusalem, and finally Eternity Future (Ch 21 and 22).
So we have event 1 (The Rapture), event 2 (The Return), and event 3 (The Retribution).
That is the book Revelations in its simplest form, but now lets go back to the beginning and break down each event further in order to better understand.
Revelations chapter 4:1-2 gives us a description of the Rapture of the Church.
4 After these things I looked, and behold, a door standing open in heaven, and the first voice which I had heard, like the sound of a trumpet speaking with me, said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after these things.” 2 Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne was standing in heaven, and One sitting on the throne. -NASB
Here the apostle John was on the Island of Patmos where he was exiled for his preaching of the Gospel (see part 1 for description) and an angel gave him a vision of what was to come. In the vision, John saw the sky open and a voice like a trumpet say “come up here” and he was “immediately in the spirit.”
This is an illustration of the rapture of the church. Paul also gives us a parallel description of the Rapture in 1 Thess 4:16-17:
16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord.
Interesting enough, both verses describe the voice as a trumpet.
After the Rapture, and for those who are left on Earth, will enter the 7 year Tribulation Period (ch 4:2 – 19:11). 15 total chapters describing the events that will take place during this 7 year period of time. In another post I will go into further detail about the events that will take place in the Tribulation Period.
The Return of Jesus Christ will start at chapter 19:11 through chapter 21 of the book of Revelations. Jesus will come down from Heaven with His Church (those who were raptured) to the Mount of Olives (Zech ch 14), He will build the Millennial Kingdom Temple (Eze ch 40-46), and then go to the Jezreel Valley where the Battle of Armageddon will take place (Rev 19:19). Jesus will destroy the armies of the earth gathered there to make war with him, and bound Satan in the bottomless pit.
That will then help us to enter into the Millennial Kingdom, where we (the Church) will rule and reign with Jesus Christ for a 1000 year period of time (Rev 20:4-6).
And then the last of the 3 main events in future will be the Retribution (Great White Throne Judgement Rev 20:11-12). Here Jesus Christ Himself, as the judge, will judge those who rejected Him while they were alive here on Earth. This judgement will not be whether or not they will enter Heaven. This judgement will be to condemn them to eternal destruction for their rejection of the salvation that only comes through Jesus Christ.
After the Retribution, Heaven and Earth will be destroyed, and a New Heaven, New Earth, and New Jerusalem will be created. Their, we will spend Eternity Future with our Lord Jesus Christ.
This concludes the “overview” of the book of Revelations. In my future post in this series, I will go into further detail about the events that will take place in the Tribulation Period, Messiahs Millennial Temple, the Judgement Seat of Christ, and the Kingdom Period.
