Hello everyone and welcome to my study on the 70 weeks of Daniel.
In my previous studies I discussed how the 70th week of Daniel (the last 7 years) is the Tribulation Period. Now I thought it would be a good time to go back and talk about the entirety of Daniel’s vision. So lets get started.
This vision takes place when Daniel, and the rest of the Jewish nation, were in their 70 year captivity. After the Babylonians destroyed the city of Jerusalem and the Temple, they took the people of Judah (Jews) into captivity and brought them to Babylon.
During the 70 year captivity, the Babylonians were conquered by the Persians, and the Jewish nation were living among them. Daniel was living in Persia when he received the vision of the 70 weeks from Gabriel. Lets look at the entire passage before we continue (Dan 9:24-27).
24 “Seventy weeks have been decreed for your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to make an end of sin, to make atonement for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy place. 25 So you are to know and discern that from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; it will be built again, with plaza and moat, even in times of distress. 26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off and have nothing, and the people of the prince who is to come will destroy the city and the sanctuary. And its end will come with a flood; even to the end there will be war; desolations are determined. 27 And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.”
This vision, given to Daniel, is one of the most important passages for students of Bible prophecy. Daniel was given a vision of the end time scenario. Let’s break this up a bit.
Beginning in verse 24, Gabriel said that “Seventy weeks have been decreed,” “to make an end of sin,” and to “to bring in everlasting righteousness.” This is a picture of the end times when Jesus comes back during His second coming and destroys sin and finally brings peace to the Earth for His millennial reign. 1 week (as prophesied in the book of Daniel) equals 7 years. So lets do the math. 70 weeks times 7 years would be 490 years. But when does this 490 years start?
Gabriel answers this question in verse 25, “from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks.”
If you read in the book of Nehemiah 2:1-8, Nehemiah was given permission by the Persian King Artaxerxes to go back to Jerusalem to rebuild the city and the Temple. This decree was given in 445 BC. This was when the 70 weeks of Daniel began. But wait, that doesn’t seem to fit does it? Way more than 490 years have passed since 445 BC right? So what are we missing? Gabriel answers this question as well, “from the issuing of a decree to restore and rebuild Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince there will be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks,” “26 Then after the sixty-two weeks the Messiah will be cut off.”
“Messiah the prince,” here is speaking of Jesus Christ himself. So from the issuing of the decree to rebuild the city and temple, until Messiah the Prince there will be 7 and 62 weeks (69 weeks total), at which Messiah (Jesus) will be cut off. What Gabriel is saying here is that 69 weeks (483) years will pass after the city and temple are rebuilt. Then Jesus will come to the Earth and He will be cut off (death, burial, and resurrection). If you add 445 BC plus 483 years, you get 38 AD, right around the time Jesus was recorded to have been crucified.
If we look at this carefully, you can see that we are missing 1 week (7 years). Why was this one week left out? The answer is the Church Age. You see, after Jesus Christ was cut off (killed) the 70 weeks of Daniel took a pause until a future date, at which time the Church (Christians) would have time to grow. It will not be, until an appointed time, that this last 7 years will take place. This 7 year period of time is the Tribulation Period, the last week of Daniels prophecy. Just before this last week starts, the Rapture of the Church will take place, and the Church (Christians) will be taken away from Earth, along with the Holy Spirit. See Rev 3:10:
10 Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth.
Gabriel also answers how this last week will start: “prince who is to come,” and in verse 27, “he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week.” The prince who is to come is not speaking of Jesus here, it is speaking of the Anti-Christ. The Anti-Christ will confirm peace treaties in the Middle east with many nations, that is when the time will start for the Tribulation Period, see my study on “Peace in the Middle East – Good, Bad, or Prophetic.”
69 weeks have already passed, the Church Age is now, all we are waiting for is the Rapture of the Church to take place. And if you study Bible prophecy and look at the headlines today, you can see how close we are to that great event.
