Hello and welcome to my study on Revelations series part 5 “The Last Half of the Tribulation Period.”
So far we’ve learned what will happen in the first half and the mid-point of the Tribulation. In the last half of the Tribulation Period, things will appear to speed up and the Judgements will get worse. Remember, in the first half there was peace between the nations (Dan 9:27), which started the sequence of events. At the mid-point of the Tribulation, Satan was cast down to Earth, he energized the Anti-Christ, who then went into the Temple and broke the peace by claiming to be God himself and demanding worship (please see the previous studies for additional information). Now lets go over the events that will follow everything we’ve learned so far. The following events will happen in the last half of the Tribulation Period.
The seven Trumpet Judgements,
The seven Bowl Judgements,
Babylon the City,
The 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ,
The Rebuilding of the Millennial Temple
The Battle of Armageddon, and
The Final Regathering of the Jews
- Note: The Tribulation actually ends at the conclusion of the last Bowl Judgement before the Return of Jesus Christ, but I decided in include Christ’s return in this study to lesson the amount of series.
As you can see, we have a lot of topics to go over. Also please be mindful that, even though I put the seven Trumpet and Bowl Judgements at the top, these Judgements will be happening throughout the last 3.5 years while the other events are also taking place.
Here is a list of the seven Trumpet Judgements:
- The First Trumpet (Rev 8:7 nasb)
Hail, fire, and blood will rain down on the earth and wipe out one-third of all plant life.
- The Second Trumpet (Rev 8:8-9 nasb)
A burning mountain falls into the sea, turns one-third of the ocean to blood, and one-third of all sea life dies.
- The Third Trumpet (Rev 8:10-11 nasb)
A star called wormwood poisons one-third of all the freshwater supply.
- The Fourth Trumpet (Rev 8:12 nasb)
One-third of the moon, stars, and sun darkens.
- The Fifth Trumpet (Rev 9:3-11 nasb)
Demons are released, most likely from the bottomless pit somewhere out in space, with human faces, long hair, lion’s teeth, and the power of a scorpion sting plague and sting nonbelievers for five months. Those who are stung will wish for death.
- The Sixth Trumpet (Rev 9:12-18 nasb)
Four fallen angels are released and wipe out people from sulfur and fire pouring out of their mouths. They manage to wipe out one-third of mankind.
- The Seventh Trumpet (Rev 11-15 nasb)
Another break from the plagues, and onto the seven bowls of judgment, 24 elders (the Church) in heaven declare it’s time to destroy those who destroy the earth. The temple in heaven opens, featuring the Ark of the Covenant.
These Trumpets Judgements will start at the end of the last Seal Judgement, just after the mid-point of the Tribulation Period. If you read each judgement carefully, you will see a common theme in almost all of them: one–third. One-third of everything will be completely wiped out, plants, sea life, fresh water supply, even humanity.
Remember back to the fourth Seal Judgement? One-fourth of all humanity was already wiped out by the Pale Horse death. So if our world population is around 7.8 billion people today, that means around 1.9 billion people will be killed, leaving around 5.8 billion people by the time of the Trumpet Judgements. So if the sixth Trumpet Judgement wipes out one-third of whats left of the 5.8 billion population, that’s an additional 1.9 billion people killed, leaving only 3.9 billion people left on earth. That’s exactly half of the worlds population killed by these judgements thus far!
While all this is going on, the Anti-Christ will be very active. Having been energized by Satan, the Anti-Christ will now work to wage war with Gods people (Israel) and will set up his one world, political, governmental, economic system which will be headquartered in the literal city of Babylon (Rev 18) which is in now-a-day Iraq.
Remember, in the first half of the Tribulation Period the Anti-Christ, along with the False Prophet, ruled over the false church (the one world religion). This one world religion is described in the book of Revelation as the “Mother of All Harlots and the Abominations of the Earth.” If we as Christians are called the Virgin Bride of Christ (Rev 21:9), then the Mother of All Harlots would be the exact opposite, the false church. The book of Revelations describes this false church as being headquartered in a city on top of seven mountains. There is only one city in the world that is described this way.. Rome, Italy. At the half way point of the Tribulation Period, the Anti-Christ will destroy this one world false church (Rev 17:16), then he himself will go to Jerusalem, become ‘energized’ by Satan, go into the Temple, claim to be God himself, and demand to be worshiped.
After this, the Anti-Christ will move his headquarters to the literal city of Babylon, set up his one world, political, governmental, economic system, and prepare to make war with God by gathering up all the armies of the earth in preparation for the final battle of Armageddon (Rev 16:14, Zech 14:2).
Before we go any further, lets now talk about the last of the 21 Judgements of the Tribulation Period, the seven Bowl Judgements.
- The First Bowl: “…harmful and painful sores came upon the people who bore the mark of the beast and worshiped its image” (Rev 16:2). The first bowl only affects those who have chosen to follow the Antichrist and not Gods chosen saints.
- The Second Bowl: “…it became like the blood of a corpse, and every living thing died that was in the sea” (Rev 16:3). The second bowl kills the remaining life in the sea. A third of sea life has already been killed by the second Trumpet Judgement.
- The Third Bowl: “…into the rivers and the springs of water, and they became blood” (Rev 16:4). The third bowl turns all the sources of fresh water into blood. The angel declares that God is just in His judgment because the evil people of the earth have shed the blood of the saints; they will now drink that blood. Also one-third of the fresh water supply was already turned to poison by the third Trumpet Judgement.
- The Fourth Bowl: “…on the sun, and it was allowed to scorch people with fire” (Rev 16:8). The fourth bowl causes the sun to burn people with its fierce heat and they curse God, but still do not repent and give God glory.
- The Fifth Bowl: “… the throne of the beast, and its kingdom was plunged into darkness” (Rev 16:10). The fifth bowl covers the Antichrist’s kingdom in darkness. The darkness is so agonizing that the people gnaw their tongues in pain. However, they continue to curse God and not repent.
- The Sixth Bowl: “… the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east” (Rev 16:12). The sixth bowl dries up the Euphrates river preparing a way for Satan, the Antichrist, the False Prophet, and the Kings of the East to make war with God.
- The Seventh Bowl: “… into the air, and a loud voice came out of the temple, from the throne, saying, ‘It is done!'” (Rev 16:17). The seventh bowl announces the end of the judgments on the world. The earth will experience lighting, thunder, giant hail stones falling on men of the earth weighing about 100 pounds each, and the largest earthquake will hit, such as never been since since the creation of man. The city of Babylon (where the Anti-Christ set up his one world governmental system) will split into three parts and was completely destroyed. The Tribulation has come to a conclusion.
The Bowl Judgements will happen fast, probably within the last six months of the Tribulation. We know this because the sixth Bowl Judgement suggests that the Anti-Christ will have already prepared his armies and will be ready for Christ’s return and the final battle of Armageddon. The six Bowl Judgement says that the Kings of the East will prepare for war. Think about this, who are the kings of the east? In our world, the far east is anything east of the Euphrates River: China, India, Korea.. etc. Remember that at this point half of the worlds population has been killed, and as of today China and India make up almost half of the worlds entire population, so it would make sense that the Kings of the East will be prepared for war, because they will be some of the only nations left.
Before we continue, remember that a remnant of the Jews will be safely tucked away in the ancient Edomite city of Petra (Rev 12:14 and Matt 24:16), where they will be protected from all these events, including the Judgements and the wrath of the Anti-Christ.
Once the Tribulation Period come to a conclusion the next event, which is one of the most significant event of our existence, will take place, the 2nd Coming of Jesus Christ.
Rev 19:11-16 gives a description of what His 2nd coming will look like. This is also prophesied by the prophet Daniel (Dan 7:13-14) and by Jesus Himself (Matt 24:30). Jesus will come down to the earth in the clouds riding on a white horse. Some prophecy teachers teach that the 1st Seal Judgement (the rider on the white horse) is Jesus coming back for His return, this is not the case. Jesus does come back on a white horse but that will happen at the end of the Tribulation Period, not the beginning. The 1st Seal Judgement is the Anti-Christ.
Jesus will not be the only one coming down to the earth, the Church (the Christians who were raptured before the Tribulation Period) will come down with Jesus also riding on white horses (Rev 19:14). There are some people who use this verse to support their view of a post Tribulation Rapture, saying that these riders are angels and not the Church, but this argument doesn’t stand if you use the proper method of interpreting scripture (using scripture to interpret scripture). Lets take a look at the clothes these riders were wearing: “fine linen, white and clean.”
There’s a reason why this passage specifically speaks about their clothes, so that we wouldn’t get them confused with angels. These clothes being white and clean symbolizes the sins of the Church being washed clean (Titus 3:5, Acts 22:16). In Rev 4:4, it says that the 24 elders (the Church) were given white garments after the pre Tribulation Rapture of the Church.
When Jesus and His Church return to the earth, He will do three things before setting up His Millennial Kingdom: Rebuild the Millennial Temple on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem (Ezk 40-46 describes the Temple that Jesus will build in the Millennial Kingdom), and then defeat the armies at the Battle of Armageddon (Rev 19:19-21, Rev 16:16) that the Anti-Christ will gather together at the valley of Megiddo (the Jezreel Valley Zec 12:11), and last Jesus will walk 200 miles southeast to the city of Petra where the Jews are safely tucked away and bring them back to Jerusalem to the Temple He built.
How do we know that Jesus will first build the Temple before the Battle of Armageddon, and where does it speak about Jesus going to Petra? The Bible doesn’t specify all of this in the book of Revelations alone, but there are other passages in the other prophetic books that indicate that this will be the case. Let’s start off with Rev 14:20:
20 And the wine press was trodden outside the city, and blood came out from the wine press, up to the horses’ bridles, for a distance of two hundred miles.
This verse is speaking about after the Battle of Armageddon. Because all the armies of the world have gathered together and were defeated, there will be so much blood that it will go up to the horses bridle (which is about 3.5 feet give or take) for a distance of 200 miles! *Note: It is exactly 200 miles from the Jezreel Valley, where the Battle of Armageddon will take place, to the entrance of Petra (seriously google it).
Now look at Isa 63:1-4:
1 Who is this who comes from Edom,
With garments of glowing colors from Bozrah,
This One who is majestic in His apparel,
Marching in the greatness of His strength?
“It is I who speak in righteousness, mighty to save.”
2 Why is Your apparel red,
And Your garments like the one who treads in the wine press?
3 “I have trodden the wine trough alone,
And from the peoples there was no man with Me.
I also trod them in My anger
And trampled them in My wrath;
And their lifeblood is sprinkled on My garments,
And I stained all My raiment.
4 “For the day of vengeance was in My heart,
And My year of redemption has come.
This is a prophecy spoken by the prophet Isaiah. Here Isaiah is speaking with Jesus. Bozrah in verse 1 is another name for the land of Edom (Isa 34:6) and is specifically the entrance to Petra. Isaiah sees a man who is “majestic” and asks who it was, “It is I who speaks in righteousness.” This is clearly speaking about Jesus. Then Isaiah asks why His clothes are red. Jesus then responds by saying that He “Trod the wine trough alone” and “trampled them in My wrath.” What Jesus is saying here is that he defeated all the armies and walked 200 miles to Petra and then back through the blood that went 200 miles from the Jezreel Valley to Edom (their lifebood is sprinkled on my garments).
Finally look at Eze 43:1-2:
1 Then he led me to the gate, the gate facing toward the east; 2 and behold, the glory of the God of Israel was coming from the way of the east. And His voice was like the sound of many waters; and the earth shone with His glory.
Here the prophet Ezekiel had a vision where he was taken to the Millennial Temple and when he was there he saw Jesus coming from the east (Petra is to the east) on His way back from Petra leading the Jews. We know its the Temple because the “gate facing toward the east” is talking about the entrance to the Temple which always faced toward the east. The “glory of the Lord” and “voice was like the sound of many waters” is easily interpreted to be Jesus (Rev 1:13-15). But how do we know that this vision was when Jesus was walking back from Petra? If you read further in this passage in Eze 43:7-8, Jesus confirms that this was the Temple and also says this in verse 8: “And they have defiled My holy name by their abominations which they have committed. So I have consumed them in My anger.” This is a parallel verse to Isa 63:3 you read earlier where Jesus tells Isaiah about the Battle of Armageddon and why His clothes were stained red.
So now we have the answers to our earlier questions. Jesus comes back, builds the Temple, defeats Anti-Christ and his armies, goes to Petra and brings the Jews back to Jerusalem to the Temple, where He will then set up his Millennial Kingdom where Jesus, as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords, will rule and reign for a 1000 year period. But what happened to Satan, the Anti-Christ, and the False Prophet? Look at Rev 19:20 and Rev 20:2-3. Immediately following His victory at the Battle of Armageddon, Jesus sends the Anti-Christ and False Prophet to the lake of fire, but Satan He bounds up for a thousand years in the bottomless pit, after which Satan will be released again for a time.
I hope you now have a better understanding of the events that will take place during the seven year Tribulation Period and the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. Check out my Revelations series part 6 where I will go more in depth about the Millennial Kingdom and it’s purpose, and why Satan was bound and released again at the end of the Jesus’s one thousand year reign.
