Hello and welcome to my Revelations study on “The Millennial Kingdom”
Our part 5 Revelations study ended with the second coming of Jesus Christ (along with the Church) to the to the earth, where He rebuilt the Millennial Temple, defeated the armies of the Battle of Armageddon, threw the Anti-Christ and the False Prophet into the lake of fire, bound Satan in the bottomless pit for one thousand years, and gathered up the Jewish people that were in Petra and brought them back to Jerusalem where He then set up His Millennial Kingdom.
So what happens next? Christ sets up a kingdom for one thousand years? What’s the purpose for this? Some of you may even ask: But I heard that Heaven was for eternity? Well you heard right, but we’re not there just yet. Before eternity future begins, there are just a few more events that must take place, events that will be the final fulfillment of Bible prophecy. These are the events that we will discuss in this study:
- The scene of the Kingdom
- The role of the Church in the Kingdom
- The Jewish nation in the Kingdom
- The believing Gentiles in the Kingdom
- Satan’s release from the bottomless pit
- The Great White Throne Judgement (second death)
- The purpose of the Millennial Kingdom
Now lets begin
I want to start this off by confirming that there will be a Millennial Kingdom. Dan 7:13-14 nasb and Rev 20:6 nasb is a good start. Here Daniel prophesies that the Son of Man (Jesus), will return and rule over His kingdom. In Revelations, the apostle John confirms that this kingdom will be for a one thousand year period. So those who deny that there will be a Millennial Kingdom are denying the absolute authenticity and authority of scripture (2 Tim 3:16-17 nasb).
So what is the Kingdom going to look like? Let’s look at the scene. The Bible makes indications that longevity (possibly up to 900+ years old) will return in the kingdom, possibly due to the return of the water canopy in the sky. Take a look at my commentary from my study “Was there Water in the Sky?“:
After doing some research, I came across a prophetic passage in the book of Zechariah (1 of 4 prophetic books of the Bible) that speaks about the Millennial Kingdom. If you take a look at Zech 8:4 nasb, it says that old men and women will again sit in the streets of Jerusalem having a staff in their hand because of age. In my Bible, I have a footnote by the word age in this verse, which defines this word as “a multitude of days.” Most of the time when the word multitude is used in the Bible, it’s speaking of more than the normal average. This is further evidence that longevity could indeed possibly be restored during Christ’s millennial reign, and the return of the water canopy could be the reason for this longevity.
The Bible makes other suggestions that the Kingdom will be much like the early days of the earth prior to the flood, such as peace in the animal kingdom. Isa 65:25 nasb says that natural predator and prey will eat together and Isa 11:7 nasb suggest that all animals will once again be vegetarians. In Gen 9:2-3 nasb, just after the flood, God allowed humans to eat anything alive for food, “just as I gave you the green plant.” This is a clear indication that all living things (including humans) prior to the flood were vegetarians, and that this will once again be established in the Millennial Kingdom.
What about sin? Scripture does speak about there being a period of peace in the Kingdom (Isa 2:4 nasb, Isa 11:8-9 nasb), but denying sin altogether is a big claim. Though the Church (Christians) will be in our eternal bodies (spiritual bodies) ruling and reigning with Christ (Rev 20:4-5 nasb, Dan 7:22 nasb), there will also be humans (flesh and blood) living and being born during the Kingdom period (those who survived the Tribulation Period, Zech 8:4 nasb). So just like in the Garden of Eden, though there will be overall peace, natural human fault will not go away, therefore sin will still exist. Those who entered the Kingdom from the Tribulation period will be righteous, but to those who are going to be born of them will still have a choice to choose or not choose Jesus Christ. Remember, Satan will be bound in the bottomless pit for most of this one thousand year period (Rev 20:2-3 nasb) so he will not have the ability to influence the world as he does today, making sin less prevalent in the Kingdom but not completely gone.
Now lets look at the three people groups that will exist in the Kingdom: The Church (Christians who were raptured and the martyrs who died during the Tribulation in the name of Jesus Rev 20:4 nasb), The Jews (Isa 2:2-4 nasb, the house of Jacob here is referring to the Jewish nation), and the Believing Gentiles (non Christians or Jews who survived the Tribulation Period and bowed down to Christ at His second coming Dan 7:13-14 nasb). Remember earlier, the Church (already in our everlasting bodies) will rule and reign with Jesus and will be given the authority to judge the nations (Rev 20:4 nasb, Dan 7:22 nasb). The Jews and the believing Gentiles will live out there normal lives in peace as it was always suppose to be. They will no longer be enemies as they are today, no war will exist between the two. This will be a cleansing period for the entire earth!
But why does the Church get their eternal bodies and rule/reign in the Kingdom but the Jews and Gentiles have to wait until after? Simply put, the Church accepted the gift of salvation through faith alone in Jesus Christ prior to physically ‘seeing‘ Jesus (ie before the Rapture and during the Tribulation Period), rather than accepting Jesus when physically seeing Him at His second coming as the Jews and Gentiles will do. Take a look at John 20:29 nasb.
Now what about Satan? From earlier, we know that he was bound in the Bottomless Pit for most of this one thousand year period. But why the Bottomless Pit and not just sent to the Lake of Fire like the Anti-Christ and False Prophet were (Rev 19:20 nasb)? Because God is not through with him just yet. Remember, sin still exists at this point and people will eventually rebel once again. So God is going to use Satan one last time to ween out those last people who have rejected Jesus during the Kingdom Period (Rev 20:7-10 nasb). This passage specifically says that Satan deceived them. Boy does that sound familiar.. Gen 3:13 nasb. Let’s look at verse 14 and 15 as well.
13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” And the woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” 14 The Lord God said to the serpent,
“Because you have done this,
Cursed are you more than all cattle,
And more than every beast of the field;
On your belly you will go,
And dust you will eat
All the days of your life;
15 And I will put enmity
Between you and the woman,
And between your seed and her seed;
He shall bruise you on the head,
And you shall bruise him on the heel.”
The serpent (Satan) deceived Eve, just as he is going to once again deceive the nations when he is released from the Bottomless Pit. Satan’s tactics do not change, why? Because they have been effective since the very beginning. And what will be the result of all of Satan’s deceptive works on earth? Revelation 20:10 nasb will answer that.
Also take a look at Gen 3:15 nasb that we see above. God here is talking to Satan directly. The women’s seed is referring to Jesus Christ, and the other seed is referring to Satan. So this verse reads: Jesus will bruise you on your head (a fatal wound), but you (Satan) will bruise Jesus on the heal (a non fatal wound). From the beginning, God tells Satan that the result of his deception will be the end of him forever, and Rev 20:10 nasb confirms this.
So after Satan is thrown into the Lake of Fire, what happens next? The Great White Throne Judgement/The Second Death (Rev 20:11-14 nasb).
All the righteous who accepted Jesus were already judged at the Judgement Seat of Christ after the Rapture of the Church. That judgement was not to determine a sentence of Heaven or Hell, but to reward all those who accepted Jesus for the work they did for Him while alive. The Great White Throne Judgement is the exact opposite. This Judgement will be to condemn all those who were alive on earth that rejected the salvation freely given by Jesus Christ through faith alone. This passage also says that the ‘books were opened.‘ These books are the books of works; they record everything done by each person on earth that was against Jesus and His salvation. These books are opened and read to each person by Jesus Himself who will be the Judge, so that each person will know exactly why they are being condemned to eternal damnation forever.
I know this just got dark, but this is the reality and God gave us these prophecies in order to prepare us for these events. We all have a choice to make, but ultimately God’s plans and promises will be fulfilled. This is absolute.
Now that we’ve seen all the events that will take place in the Millennial Kingdom, the question is, what’s the purpose? Why a Millennial Kingdom and not just straight to eternity future? One reason, is for the earth to enjoy a period of complete peace after thousands of years that sin has poisoned this world. A second reason can be answered by the apostle Peter (2 Peter 3:9 nasb):
- 9 The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.
The Lord will save all His people, and He is patient. According to Peter, God will not bring about the end (the second death) until all His chosen people come to Him (Matt 6:37 nasb).
